Rock Mechanics

The course covers the fundamentals of rock mass behavior under stress fields induced by mining or construction, with emphasis on the application of various techniques for ground control. Topics of prime interest include stress-strain relationships, in-situ stresses, engineering properties of rock masses, behavior of stresses around rock openings, rock mass classification, rock failure criteria, rock reinforcement and support, basic rock mechanics design considerations for underground and surface mines, and instrumentation techniques.
